November 12 event will connect Jewish seniors with more than 40 organizations and service providers
Navigating healthcare, finding the right services and knowing where to turn for support can be challenging, especially as we age. On Thursday, November 12, the Jewish Seniors' Wellness Fair will bring information, resources and caring professionals together under one roof to help Ottawa's Jewish seniors live healthier, more connected and independent lives.
The fair takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kehillat Beth Israel and is presented through Roundtable 613's Aging & Vitality Council, in partnership with AJA 50+, the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge, Jewish Family Services (JFS), the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, the Soloway JCC (SJCC) and Kehillat Beth Israel (KBI).
Funded in part by a Seniors Active Living Centre grant from Ontario’s Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility, the event will feature more than 30 organizations and service providers offering information about healthcare, wellness and community resources. Four presentations will address practical topics, including navigating the healthcare system, accessing community support, returning home after a hospital stay and preventing falls.
Attendees will also have opportunities to speak directly with professionals in areas such as hearing, vision and occupational therapy, and receive practical guidance from Jewish Family Services case workers about finding and accessing services. There will also be time to connect with friends and neighbours and enjoy light refreshments.
The fair is one of the collaborative initiatives emerging from Roundtable 613's Aging & Vitality Council, established to address the evolving needs of Ottawa's aging Jewish population. With 23.2 per cent of Jewish Ottawa aged 65 and older, and that proportion continuing to grow, the council brings together community organizations to identify gaps in services, improve coordination and develop new approaches to helping seniors age with dignity, vitality and connection.
The council's work reflects the Jewish Federation of Ottawa's strategic commitment to bringing organizations together, strengthening collaboration and responding to the changing needs of our community.
"The Jewish Federation of Ottawa is very excited to be part of this important event," said Pauline Colwin, Federation's Vice President of Communications. "We are especially grateful to the dedicated staff and volunteers at AJA 50+, KBI, JFS, and Soloway JCC who have collaborated and worked so hard to bring this fair to life. We hope the fair will help seniors and their families discover valuable resources, make connections and find the support they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives. This is exactly what we hope to accomplish by bringing our community organizations together."
The fair is open to seniors, family members, caregivers and anyone interested in learning more about the resources available to support healthy aging.
