Since October 7, the Ottawa Angels, a dedicated group of volunteers, have been tirelessly working to support Israel. Their mission is clear: to contribute to the well-being of Israeli citizens by funding life-saving equipment like ambulances through Magen David Adom (MDA). In a recent interview, community leader Joel Diener shared insights about the group’s work, the challenges they face, and the importance of community involvement.
"Without actually being on the ground volunteering in Israel, contributing to the purchase of an ambulance through Magen David Adom is one of the most effective ways that we as fundraisers can contribute to the well-being of Israeli citizens of all stripes," shared Diener, emphasizing how critical this remote support is in times of crisis.
The Israeli government does not cover the cost of ambulances or paramedic services, so MDA relies heavily on donations.
"Supporting MDA is vital to those who suffer from attacks coming from the south, the north, and the eastern borders," he explained. With tensions running high in northern Israel, including Ottawa’s partner communities, the need for medical equipment is more urgent than ever. "The possibility of all-out war there is dangerously close. The need for medical equipment is now!" Diener stressed.
Volunteerism and Community Resilience
Volunteerism is at the heart of the Ottawa Angels. While many in the community cannot physically volunteer in Israel, purchasing ambulances allows them to make a meaningful contribution.
"Supporting the purchase of an ambulance is one of many ways that we in Ottawa can support the well-being of Israel short of actually being on the ground directly volunteering," said Ari Breiner, another member of the Ottawa Angels. "This form of remote aid is crucial, especially for those unable to travel but still eager to contribute."
Challenges and Community Response
The Ottawa Angels have faced some significant challenges in their efforts to maintain momentum after the initial surge of donations. "Why we felt the need for this campaign eight months after another group from Ottawa (including a few of us) successfully purchased an ambulance was two-fold," Diener shared. "After the initial rush and generosity shown by the Jewish community in Ottawa, many of us felt that we had done our part. Complacency set in, but Israel continues to need our help and will even after this campaign."
Diener stressed the urgency of the situation: "Israel’s situation isn’t getting any better. Our help is needed now as much or more than nine months ago." Despite these challenges, the Ottawa community has demonstrated resilience, recognizing the ongoing need for support.

Betsy Prager, a retired social worker, had long committed herself to supporting Magen David Adom. Several years ago, she made a pledge to purchase an ambulance for Israel, a project she made public by requesting donations in lieu of gifts for both her 70th birthday and her wedding to Brian Mordfield. When Diener learned of her dedication, the two met and saw an opportunity to amplify their impact. Given the urgency of the situation in Israel, they decided to "go big or go home." Collaborating with other community members, they launched a fundraising effort to bring this project to fruition as quickly as possible.

Looking ahead, the Ottawa Angels plan to continue their work, not just through ambulance purchases but through other initiatives aimed at supporting Israel and strengthening Ottawa’s Jewish community. "The Jewish community of Ottawa needs to be reminded that the people of Israel need our support now and after this latest round of hostilities," added Paul Finn, another Ottawa Angels supporter, urging others to get involved by donating, volunteering, or spreading the word about their critical work.
